AU Background:
In Arcueid True Ending, Arcueid left Japan to return to her castle and sleep for eternity, or at least until she was awoken to complete another duty. Shiki, madly in love with Arcueid, refused to accept this and traveled to Europe, where Arcueid's castle was located. With the help of Zelretch, the man who considers himself Arc's grandfather, he finds her castle and attempts to wake her from her eternal slumber. Unfortunately, Shiki fails. Arcueid cannot be awakened by a mere mortal, even one with extraordinary abilities like Shiki.

Shiki gives up all hope of awakening Arcueid and, instead, vows to keep her safe from all the threats in the world that seek to destroy her. He follows the adage of 'better to have love and lost than to have never loved at all'. He knows he won't be alive when Arcueid regains consciousness but if he can remove the threat of every being and organization in existence, he can feel assured that when he dies, Arcueid will be able to awaken safely.

This puts Shiki at odds with not only the Dead Apostle Ancestors (most notably Arcueid's 'sister' Altrouge, who wants Arc dead) but with the Church, who also want Arcueid dead. Shiki, picking which Dead Apostle Ancestors he thinks are weakest, works his way up the list of 27, mercilessly killing them left and right. After killing the two lowest ranked members, he is approached by two different Dead Apostles, both willing to work with him. One is Merem Solomon, a member of Burial Agency, a Church organization specializing in killing vampires. The second is Enhance, a half-vampire/half-human who wants to kill all Dead Apostles. Shiki allies himself with Enhance during his time and works with information fed to him from Merem.

The Mage's Association, seeing a threat and interest in Shiki due to his Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, attempt to capture him for study but their expeditions continually end up dead, all killed by Shiki himself. The Church, now tired of dealing with Arcueid seriously, has decided to stop wasting their good operatives and send a bunch of expendable agents every year so they can pretend they care, only to watch these agents die by Shiki's hands. With Enhance's help and Merem's information, in four years, Shiki has killed over a dozen Dead Apostle Ancestors, leaving Altrouge and her bodyguards seeking ways to stop this threat to their existence. That is the current state of the world.

Personality:
Long gone is the innocence of Shiki's youth. Where Shiki used to be annoyed or irritated by anything that was out of the ordinary, he now simply takes it in and goes with the flow. He's learned over the years that being reactionary will cause more problems than it's worth. Instead, he treats things as if he were a professional; staying calm and considering all his options. He keeps a solid base for his personality or else he would go insane due to the strains on his mind caused by his Mystic Eyes of Death Perception.

However, not all is lost. Shiki is still very much a nice person who is willing to help others without reservation. While he doesn't believe himself to be a hero, he will do what he thinks he can do for others if he is in a position to help. He is also still overly nice and complimentary to people who may not be acquainted with, often giving him the air that he's hitting on girls when he's speaking to them despite the fact that Shiki has little interest in that type of thing. The advice Aoko gave him as a child is still carried within him. He still refuses to regret any of his actions and simply chooses to learn from bad experiences instead of having a self-loathing from them.

With those he views as enemies or whom he may be fighting, Shiki clams up and is extremely serious. He gives nothing and allows his foes to take nothing from them. Instead, he is very clinical and seeks to end confrontations as quick as possible, often times ending in the death of his foe. He rarely, if ever, gets extremely angry as he keeps his emotions under control. But in a situation where he normally would have reason for such hot feelings, he simply gets colder as he's over-compensating for emotions that he should be experiencing.

Overall, Shiki is much more mature than he was at a younger age, tempered by a long time of living in danger and the failure of waking Arcueid. Speaking of Arcueid, Shiki is absolutely dedicated to keeping her safe. There was a love there that morphed a little during a period of despair, turning more into a loyalty. If he were to see her again, all of that would come back but Shiki has, for a long time, put aside his feelings in exchange for the urge to keep her safe during her most vulnerable moment.

Abilities:
Instinctual Abilities

Sixth sense: This ability allows Shiki to detect beings that "do not belong in the world". Whenever he's near a supernatural entity, such as a vampire or demonic hybrid, his instincts will immediately alert him to its presence. The more powerful the entity, the stronger the reaction. The more inhuman it is, the more hostile Shiki's subconscious will be, to the point of demanding him to remove the threat immediately.

Danger Instinct: Shiki's ability to perceive killing/harmful intent towards his person. Whenever his life is threatened in any way, Shiki will subconsciously understand this and, depending on the level of the threat, automatically react accordingly. At his particular level, his instinct is said to border on precognition, and assassination techniques are all but useless against him. He's even shown in canon to dodge and defend attacks from behind that he had no idea was there (vs. Ciel when she tried to impale him from behind).


Speed and Agility

Flash Sheath: One of the signature techniques of the Nanaya clan, Flash Sheath refers to the user's ability to attack faster than the eye can track. To the would-be observer, the user's arm movements would be so fast that at best, it would look like nothing more than a series of blurs, if even that. Shiki's signature technique, the Seventeen-Piece Dissection is performed using this technique, allowing Shiki to slice an enemy apart into seventeen pieces in what would appear to be one stroke of his knife.

Flash Dash: One of the signature techniques of the Nanaya clan, Flash Dash refers to the user's ability to move faster than the eye can track. To the would-be observer, the use of this technique would cause the user to completely disappear from view. This ability can also be used to scale walls and ceilings as if they were flat ground, as Shiki is moving as such a great speed that sometimes, gravity means little.


Mystic Eyes of Death Perception

The Mystic Eyes of Death Perception allow Shiki to see the fated destruction of his target. This applies to living and non-living things, mortals and immortals. In essence, Shiki sees lines and points on everything in his sight. By tracing a line with his knife, the target then splits or falls apart cleanly where his knife traveled. This damage cannot be repaired by any means including regeneration or even spacial magic. By stabbing a point, Shiki kills the entire existence of his target. Moments afterward, the target will die. This ability completely ignores reincarnation, regeneration, inability to take damage, and immortality. The reason why this is so powerful is because Shiki is destroying the existence of his target. Upon that destruction, the world senses a paradox where the target doesn't exist anymore but is still alive. To correct that paradox, the world simply allows the target to die then and there.

There are beings immune to this ability but they are few and far between. Mostly creatures who have no concept of the idea of 'death' and, as such, can't die simply because it's not something that exists to them.

Shiki's Mystic Eyes, though, have become so powerful that it is eating away at his brain and his sanity. To protect from this, Shiki keeps his eyes covered by bandages at all times unless he requires them in a fight.


Pure Eyes

Shiki's original psychic ability that he was born with, Pure Eyes are a form of clairvoyance that allows the user to see that which cannot be seen, a power that many saints in human history have had. Each individual's Pure Eye is unique, and all Pure Eye users see something different. Shiki's particular Pure Eye allows him to be able to see that which 'shouldn't' be seen. For example, in Kohaku's scenario in Tsukihime, he was able to 'see' Akiha's power in the form of red hair, something even Akiha herself couldn't see, allowing him to cut it apart before it could do much damage to him. This ability likely extends to most other forms of invisible psychic abilities. Shiki still has this ability in addition to his Death Perception, although it's implied that he is able to turn this ability on and off at will.
